Two Bend men arrested in fight, car theft

An argument over a debt led to a fight and an alleged car theft, which in turn resulted in a gun-drawn traffic stop and the arrest of two Bend men, police said Monday.

Police responded around 2:40 p.m. Sunday to a reported “carjacking” in the 100 block of NE Sixth Street, said Cpl. John Lawrence.

Officers were told that Adam Anderson, 25, aided by Christopher Hulgan, 39, was trying to collect on a debt from the 20-year-old victim, Lawrence said.

A fight ensued, during which the victim sustained minor injuries that did not require medical attention, the corporal said.

The victim ultimately was able to get away from Anderson and call 911. While on that call, the victim saw Hulgan driving from the scene in the victim’s SUV, Lawrence said.

Police soon found the SUV and conducted a high-risk (guns drawn) traffic stop, arresting Hulgan, the driver, Lawrence said. Anderson returned to the scene and also was arrested, he said.

Both men were taken to the Deschutes County Jail, where each was charged with second-degree robbery, unlawful use of a vehicle and third-degree assault.

Anderson remained held without bail Monday on a probation violation and Hulgan on a parole violation, jail records showed.
