Retired Deschutes SO captain shoots self in hand

A retired Deschutes County sheriff’s captain accidentally shot himself in the hand Wednesday morning while disassembling his pistol for cleaning at a shooting range east of Bend, unaware a round was still in the chamber, deputies said.

Randy Wight, 66, was flown by Air Link helicopter to St. Charles Bend with the non-life-threatening wound, said sheriff’s Capt. Tim Edwards, adding that no one else was injured in the incident, which occurred around 10:35 a.m.

During annual firearms qualifications for retired police officers, Wight had finished his qualifications at the agency’s firearms range in the Millican area. He “was in the process of disassembling his 9MM pistol for cleaning, unaware that a round was still in the chamber,” Edwards said in a news release.

Other retired officers and sheriff’s office training staff rendered immediate first aid while the Air Link helicopter was called to the scene.

Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the shooting incident, Edwards said.
