SE Bend dispute leads to gunshot, arrest, dog bite

A 29-year-old southeast Bend resident was arrested Saturday night after a reported domestic disturbance led to a gunshot, as well as a minor injury to a police sergeant when the man’s dog bit him during the arrest, officers said.

Officers responded around 6:40 p.m. Saturday to a report of a woman calling Deschutes County 911 reporting a disturbance at 728 SE Sun Lane, Sgt. Tom Pine said Sunday.

Initial reports from dispatch included information the man involved was intoxicated and guns were in the house, as well as in vehicles on the property, Pine said.

While officers responded, dispatchers reported a “shots fired” call from someone within 300 feet of the initial disturbance call, around the same time, the sergeant said.

Joshua Elgin Edwards was contacted at the home and taken into custody.

Police obtained a search warrant during the investigation, recovering several guns and both live and spent ammunition, Pine said, adding that further investigation revealed Edwards fired a gun during the incident.

A police sergeant was bitten by Edwards’ dog while the man was being taken into custody, Pine said. The officer was treated for minor injuries, the only ones sustained in the incident, he added.

Edwards was lodged in the county jail on three counts of first-degree menacing and charges of reckless endangering and unlawful use of a weapon. His bail was set at $30,000.
