Chimps Inc. sanctuary gets $10,000 gift

Chimps, Inc., the Tumalo chimpanzee sanctuary, recently received a $10,000 gift for its vital operations, as part of the Verizon “Game Changers” campaign.

Local celebrity and San Diego restaurateur Brian Malarkey, a native of Bend. was a participant in the Verizon campaign, along with football great Shawne Merriman, Bachelor 14 runner-up Tenley Molzahn and J Public Relations founder Jamie Lynn Sigler.

Each celebrity was pitted against one another in the social media arena to see which one could garner the most votes to win $10,000, to be donated to their favorite charity.

Top Chef celebrity Brian Malarkey was announced the winner on Thursday, November 14 at a reception hosted by Riviera magazine at Hotel Palomar, and his favorite charity Chimps Inc. was awarded the $10,000 check.

“Chimps Inc. does incredible things to protect and rescue chimpanzees, and I am thrilled to be able to provide this check to them,” said Malarkey. The other celebrity’s charities each received $4,000 from Verizon.

Chimps Inc. was founded in 1995 and has since devoted its efforts to providing lifetime care to captive chimpanzees and lynx rescued from the pet and entertainment industries. The organization is also dedicated to overcoming the exploitation and cruelty that captive wild animals face through advocacy, education and conservation www.chimps-inc.org.
