Madras man, 18, arrested in girlfriend’s shooting
An 18-year-old Madras resident was arrested on assault and other charges in a weekend shooting that left his live-in girlfriend in critical condition, police said Monday.
Officers responded shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday to the reported shooting at the Willow Creek Apartments at 410 NE Oak Street, said Assistant Chief Tanner Stanfill.
An investigation found that Thomas Michael Knapp shot Jessica Haynes, 23, Stanfill said, adding that the gun was recovered at their apartment.
Haynes was taken by Jefferson County EMS ambulance to St. Charles-Madras, then flown to St. Charles Bend, where Stanfill said she was in critical condition Monday.
Knapp was taken into custody and later booked into the Jefferson County Jail on charges of second- and third-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
District Attorney Steve Leriche said Judge Annette Hillman set Knapp’s bail at $450,000 and his next court date for Thursday at 1 pm.
Madras police have been assisted by the sheriff’s office and Oregon State Police in their ongoing investigation, Stanfill said.
