Redmond HS receives garden club grant

Redmond High School has received a $750 grant from the Redmond Garden Club to purchase instructional tools for plant grafting.

Each year, the Redmond Garden Club offers grants to local schools for instructional equipment for education about plants and gardening in the classroom.This is the second grant that Redmond High School has received for its horticulture program.

The grant will be used to expand the horticulture curriculum to include grafting of woody plants and the development of instruction about the nursery stock industry.

All fruit & nut trees, as well as most ornamental trees are grown from grafted root stock.

The RHS Agriculture Program will be venturing into the industry of apple and hazelnut nursery stock. The $750 grant will be used to purchase grafting equipment to meet industry standards to use for instruction and production.

Redmond High School hopes to develop a partnership with regional tree and nursery stock growers to further develop the program. Ag students will begin grating trees in later winter/early spring with the ultimate goal to produce nursery stock for growers in Oregon and beyond.
