Wirkkala murder trial delayed until June

A Bend murder trial was delayed by about six months Friday while attorneys continue to sift through evidence.

Luke Wirkkala, 32, is accused of shooting and killing David Ryder, 31, last February.

His trial was scheduled to start next month, but is now scheduled to start June 3 rd .

In court documents, prosecutors said both men were drunk the night of the killing, and the two engaged in sexual activity.

Defense lawyers have said Wirkkala was not given his Miranda rights against self-incrimination before being questioned, and was denied his right to a lawyer.

They also claim some evidence was obtained through an illegal search and seizure.
