Managers from the Oregon Department of Transportation and Contractor High Desert Aggregate and Paving will join elected and appointed officials from the city of Madras on Wednesday to kick off a major highway improvement project on Highway 97.

The VIPs are invited to a brief 1:30 p.m. groundbreaking event at Totem Park to launch a $4.5 million reconstruction of the “South Y” area of Highway 97 to improve safety and traffic flow, said ODOT spokesman Peter Murphy.

The project is slated to be completed by the end of October.
