Prineville officer assault, burglary suspect enters plea

KTVZ

A Prineville man accused of trying to kill a police officer with a hammer during a jewelry store burglary last weekend smiled and waved as he appeared by video Friday in Crook County Circuit Court.

Trevor Trollope, 25, pleaded not guilty to the charges in a 10-count indictment, including attempted aggravated murder, assaulting a public safety officer and several charges of robbery, burglary and theft in the attack early last Saturday on Prineville police Sgt. Jimmy O’Daniel after he allegedly broke into Terry’s Jewelry in downtown Prineville.

Prosecutors said O’Daniel was responding to the burglar-alarm call when Trollope attacked him with the hammer, hitting him on the head at least 12 times. A citizen on a-ride-along with O’Daniel, a county prosecutor, was able to help stop the attack and subdue Trollope.

Sheriff Jim Hensley and one of his deputies were in the courtroom for the hearing to show support their support for O’Daniel.

“It could be anyone of us,” Hensley said. “We support each other, and it’s just making a statement that we do matter. I care about Jimmy and the other law enforcement officers in our community.”

Trollope is being held on $500,000 bail. He’s due to return to court for a trial readiness hearing on April 28 at 1:30 p.m.

Prineville police told NewsChannel 21 that O’Daniel suffered a severe concussion. He was released from the hospital the same day he was attacked and will take a few weeks off work to recover.
