Two local high schools are hosting all-school events to honor local veterans, in conjunction with the Veterans Day holiday. Summit High School will host its first ever Veterans Honor Day on Friday, Nov. 6 and Bend Senior High School will host a Veterans Assembly on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

Summit High School: The celebration — the first of its kind for Summit — will include an all-school assembly to honor veterans, including seven veterans from World War II, who will be in attendance. Staff and students with connections to the military will be honored during the assembly. Students will get the chance to interact and ask questions of the WWII veterans in small groups after the all-school assembly.

“We are thrilled to salute these veterans and to allow our students to get the chance to interact with them and learn from their experiences,” said Dewittie.

Friday, Nov. 6 Schedule:

Bend Senior High School: This is the fourth year the high school has hosted an assembly to honor veterans and each year the event focuses on a different set of veterans. This year the focus is on veterans from the Global War on Terrorism. The school assembly will include the awarding of a diploma to a veteran as well as reading of the names and honoring the families ofsix local soldiers who died fighting the Global War on Terrorism. The school will also recognizeRobert Maxwell, recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor and distinguished alumni of Bend Senior High School.

“We have a long tradition of honoring veterans and believe students gain a better understanding of their role in the world when we acknowledge the sacrifices made by members of our military,” said Principal Christopher Reese.

Tuesday, Nov. 10 Schedule:

10:59 to 11:44 a.m. — All-school assembly.
