Soroptimist Intl. of Bend awards three $2,000 COCC scholarships

On March 24th, Dr. Shirley Metcalf, President of Central Oregon Community College addressed the annual Soroptimist International of Bend “Live Your Dream” Awards Banquet. Three COCC students, Aleshia Detweiler, Becky Pomeroy and Ana Torres were this year’s recipients.

All three have overcome great difficulties while being the heads of their households. Now, each is on a career path from nutritional therapy practitioner to police officer to elementary teacher, respectively, that will bring them to their full potential and financial stability.

The $2,000 award that each received will help them with any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation.

In addition, Ms. Detweiler has also received one of the 18 North West Regional Soroptimist Awards of $3,000. Her application is eligible to be considered at the next level of awards.

The Soroptimist “Live Your Dream” Award assists women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects.

Eligible applicants must be enrolled in or have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program and must demonstrate financial need.
