A Bend man was taken to the hospital and arrested by citation on DUII charges after crashing along Cline Falls Road in the Tumalo area Friday night, landing partially in an irrigation canal, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies, Oregon State Police and Bend Fire Department medics responded shortly before 9 p.m. to the reported single-vehicle crash on Cline Falls Road near milepost 7, said Lt. Tim Leak.

They arrived to find a blue 2007 Volvo S60 on its side in a canal on the west side of the road, Leak said.

An investigation found that the driver, Steven Crawford, 66, of Bend, was heading north on the road and failed to negotiate a sweeping right-hand turn. Leak said the car left the road, overturned and came to rest on its side, with the rear of the car in the canal.

Fire personnel removed Crawford from the car and took him by ambulance to St. Charles Bend with non-life-threatening injuries. A house supervisor at the hospital said he was treated for his injuries and released.

Investigators found alcohol was a factor in the crash. Crawford was arrested and cited to appear in court for driving under the influence of intoxicants.
