Woman at scene of NW Bend shooting speaks out

An argument led to gunfire in northwest Bend early Saturday, ending with two men shot in the street. A woman who came upon the scene and tried to comfort the victims recounted the events Sunday.

The shooting victims identified as Blake Blevins, 32, of Bend, and California resident Erik Menezes, 31.

Darcie Wilson said she was in a cab with friends when her girls’ night out took an unexpected turn. Her cab driver had been alerted to the shooting and pulled over near the scene.

“There they were, laying on the ground and Erik, we could visibly see blood and see where he had been wounded. But with Blake, he was just laying there,” Wilson recalled.

She sat with him, trying to comfort him until the ambulance arrived.

“I just grabbed his hand and held onto his hand and was like, ‘OK, I want you to squeeze my hand. OK, good,'” Wilson said,

“Then every time that he would stop squeezing my hand — ‘No, keep squeezing my hand. Talk to me. Tell me, what are you doing? Do you want to talk about your mom? Just talk to me. Say anything,'” she said.

A few minutes later, Wilson said, Blevins went into shock.

When paramedics arrived, Blevins and Menezes were taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. Police said Menezes was critically wounded, but no updates on their conditions have been released.

Wilson said she won’t feel normal again until she hears they’re OK.

“It’s the difference between helping someone get through a hard time for a little bit, and possibly have been holding someone’s hand who is no longer with us,” Wilson said.
