Fire heavily damages Powell Butte home; no injuries

A fire heavily damaged a home in Powell Butte Sunday morning, but the smoke alarms alerted the family inside, who escaped unhurt, officials said Monday.

Crook County Fire and Rescue was dispatched around 9:40 a.m. to the possible structure fire on Southwest Wahkiakum Street in Powell Butte, Fire Marshal Russell Deboodt said.

Arriving crews found the blaze had begun on the exterior of the home and already had made its way into the attic, Deboodt said. A total of 13 firefighters responded to the scene from the main and Powell Butte stations, along with a mutual-aid engine from Redmond Fire and Rescue.

The firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, keeping it from destroying the entire home, Deboodt said. The cause of the fire could not be definitively determined, he added. The agency did not provide a damage estimate.

Red Cross assistance was offered, but the family indicated they had other resources and would not need it, the fire marshal said.

“Crook County Fire and Rescue would like to recognize the occupant’s young daughter for calling 911 and providing accurate information to responding units,” Deboodt said in a news release. “It is an important reminder to talk to all members of the household about fire safety, knowing your address and remaining calm while providing information to responding crews.”
