Apparent meth lab found in OSP raid north of Madras

(Update: OSP says materials apparently to make methamphetamine)

An Oregon State Police raid on a home north of Madras Monday afternoon during a property-crime investigation turned up an apparent methamphetamine lab that prompted the call-up of an OSP hazardous-materials team in protective suits to collect and remove what they found, troopers said early Tuesday.

OSP executed a search warrant in the 5600 block of Northwest Columbia Drive after an initial investigation of property crime prompted a raid to seize evidence at the home of resident Joshua Joe Joseph, 28, OSP Sgt. Michael Berland said.

Along with the expected evidence, which was not disclosed, troopers discovered a clandestine drug lab, along with other drug-related evidence, Berland said.

OSP Sgt. Kaipo Raiser told NewsChannel 21 on Tuesday the evidence “appears to be consistent with being a methamphetamine lab, but we are unable to confirm that until lab results come back.”

The OSP’s Drug Enforcement Section responded to process the drug lab and to properly collect the hazardous materials on scene, the sergeant said.

Joseph was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Jefferson County Jail on charges of first-degree forgery, first-degree possession of a forged instrument, theft by deception, possession of a stolen vehicle and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. His bail totaled $75,000, according to jail records.

Berland did not provide specifics about the drug lab materials, but said more drug-related charges are expected after the case is referred to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

OSP also was assisted by the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement (CODE) Team, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Jefferson County Rural Fire District.
