New C.O. group takes on gun violence, gains fast following
A group of Central Oregonians say they’ve had enough inaction on gun violence, so they’re taking on the big issue themselves. And their mission is getting a lot of attention.
Angela Chisum said a feeling of desperation led her to create a Facebook group for others who might be feeling the same, and now it’s spreading like wildfire. The group: Parents, Students, Teachers and Friends of Bend – La Pine School District Against Gun Violence, has gained about 2,000 followers in less than a week.
Chisum said Thursday it’s not an anti-gun group, and people with all viewpoints are welcome. They’re focused on finding solutions, and are hoping the group’s movement creates changes at the local level.
“We want to work with our schools, teachers and staff and hopefully be able to have a more open conversation about how we can best protect our kids,” Chisum said. “The main point is, none of us want to see our kids hurt or put in a place of danger, or even scared to go to school every day.”
Member Julia Kelleher said the group is for people who recognize something needs to be done, and promotes a dialogue to find solutions.
“For the first time, I saw a group of people say, ‘OK, let’s really talk and figure out what we can do on a local level to incite change, and maybe Bend can be the example.’ Maybe we can be the example that leads the world. That would be amazing,” Kelleher said.
Even though the group just started, members are making moves. Chisum said right now, they’re working to pair liaisons with each school in the district. They’re also planning on organizing a student-led school walkout, as well as a march some time next month.
