Fire destroys Bend fifth-wheel RV; resident unhurt

A fifth-wheel RV that was a man’s home was destroyed in a fire on Bend’s north end Friday evening, officials said.

Bend Fire Department crews responded around 6:25 p.m. to the reported fire in the 63000 block of North Highway 97 and arrived to find it was fully involved, Deputy Fire Marshal Cindy Kettering said.

The RV was parked on private property and not attached to a vehicle when the fire broke out.

Losses were estimated at $5,000 to the vehicle, which was not insured, and $2,000 the contents, Kettering said.

The American Red Cross was assisting the owner with temporary lodging and basic necessities.

Kettering said the Bend Fire Department wants to remind the public that working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are just as important in RVs as they are in homes, providing an early warning when seconds count while also protecting people from colorless, odorless and deadly CO.
