PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The family of a black man who was fatally shot by Portland State University campus police is demanding the university immediately disarm its campus officers.

Jason Erik Washington was shot on June 29 while trying to break up a fight.

Oregon Public Broadcasting says Washington’s brother on Friday compared the incident to other high-profile shootings of black men.

Andre Washington called the incidents an “affliction in America.”

The 45-year-old Washington was trying to break up a fist fight outside a bar by the Portland State campus.

A bystander who filmed the incident has said a gun fell out of the Navy veteran’s pocket during the scuffle.

Witness Keyaira Smith says Washington was trying to retrieve it when he was shot.

Washington had a valid license to carry a concealed weapon.
