Silver Rail Elementary to reopen after survey shows overwhelming support from families

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Bend-La Pine Schools plans to reopen Silver Rail Elementary School after a survey showed 86.2% of families prefer returning to the campus.
The facility will remain closed for repairs through November 6th following damage to the building.
District facilities crews and building partners are actively restoring the impacted areas of the school. Reopening depends on completing all necessary repairs and meeting applicable safety codes, including Fire Marshal requirements for exit doors.
“We intend to open as soon as possible, as we know that routine and community are helpful in recovery,” Bend-La Pine Schools said in a statement to district families. “We understand how much families want their children back in school, surrounded by familiar faces, routines and the support of their school community.”
Bend-La Pine Schools also announced plans to hold community engagement sessions next week to address districtwide safety and security. District officials acknowledged that while strong safety measures are in place, they are committed to reviewing and strengthening existing systems based on community feedback.
For families who are not ready to return to the building or prefer a different learning environment, the district is offering alternatives for the remainder of the school year, including Bend-La Pine Online or transfer to another school.
“We understand that not everyone will be ready to return at the same time,” Bend-La Pine Schools said. “If your family needs more time, we will be ready for your student when you feel comfortable returning.”
To assist families during the closure, the district identified several key support areas based on survey feedback, including home learning activities, mental health resources and child care.
The Boys & Girls Club of Central Oregon is providing child care options for district families through November 6th, with availability details posted on the Silver Rail Community Information Hub.
Free food assistance is also being provided for Silver Rail students. Grab-and-go breakfast and lunch will be available Monday through Friday, November 2nd-6th, from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at R.E. Jewell Elementary School, located at 20550 Murphy Road in Bend.
District officials expect to have a clearer repair timeline by the end of this week. Bend-La Pine Schools plans to announce the official date of return and specific details regarding next week's community engagement sessions as soon as information becomes available.
