Woodburn HS football coach charged with sex abuse

WOODBURN, Ore. (AP) — Police have arrested a high school football coach and physical education teacher south of Portland on sex abuse charges.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says detectives arrested 38-year-old Nicholas Federico of Salem Monday at Woodburn High School.

Federico is accused of messaging at least one underage student using Snapchat, which led to what the sheriff’s office called an “intimate relationship.”

The sheriff’s office says an investigation began when they received a tip in July about a video showing Federico in an “intimate act” on Instagram.

Police have charged Federico with multiple counts of sex abuse, online sexual corruption of a child and official misconduct. He’s been lodged at Marion County Jail.

It wasn’t immediately known if he has a lawyer. He’s scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Federico has worked for the school since 2011. The Woodburn School District said on its website Monday that Federico was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
