A vacant mobile home northwest of Madras was destroyed by a fire Sunday night and the cause is under investigation, officials said.

Jefferson County Fire District No. 1 crews were dispatched around 7:50 p.m. to the reported fire in the 5700 block of Northwest Columbia Drive, Captain Tom Jaca said.

The fire, about five miles northwest of Madras off U.S. Highway 26, was called in by numerous passers-by, Jaca said.

Nine volunteers and three staff firefighters were called to the scene, The crews staged a defensive attack on the heavily burning structure, then transitioned into overhaul work, Jaca said.

The structure was going to be dismantled and hauled off the site by the owner in coming days. The fire left it a total loss.

Mutual-aid assistance was provided by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Jefferson County EMS, the captain said.
