Maine workers make progress in cleanup of spilled firefighting foam at former Navy base

BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) — Maine officials say firefighting foam that spilled in a hangar at the Brunswick Executive Airport has been been removed and that mitigation is underway on four retention ponds. An investigation is underway into why a fire suppression system discharged on Aug. 19. The discharge released 1,450 gallons of firefighting foam mixed with 50,000 gallons of water at the former Navy base. The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention advised the public on Monday not to consume or to limit consumption of fish from four nearby bodies of water. Federal records show the spill is the biggest accidental discharge in Maine since it began keeping records in the 1990s.
