Redmond sanitation company worker injured when train collides with truck at crossing
(Update: OSP provides details, identifies driver, treated and released)
REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A Redmond sanitation company worker was injured and taken to the hospital Friday afternoon after his truck was struck by a freight train at a crossing south of Redmond, officials and others said.
The collision involving a BNSF Railway train and a pickup with flatbed trailer from Superior Sanitation occurred around 12:45 p.m. at a crossing on a gravel road that leads east from Highway 97 to the Redmond Rod and Gun Club.
Oregon State Police later said the driver, Ismael Fragoso, 25, of Redmond, stopped on the railroad tracks for an unknown reason and his Ford F-550 pickup was struck on the driver’s side door by a southbound BNSF train. Troopers said he was taken to St. Charles Bend, where hospital officials said he was treated and released.
A bystander told NewsChannel 21 the truck was heading east when it was hit by the southbound train, which spun it around, causing the truck to topple and spill two portable toilets and a pump.
Oregon State Police confirmed the crash but had few initial details to share.
A company representative said the driver had come from Bend and was headed to a private property owner along the road to service their rental toilet.
