This Just In: Jefferson County Announces Burning Restrictions

MADRAS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Jefferson County Fire and EMS announced on Friday the county's burning restrictions will go into effect on Monday, May 4th. Below is the press release from the department.


Public Service Announcement

Burning Closure Effective May 4, 2026

Due to drying fire fuels and forecasted weather conditions, all open burning will close effective sunset on Sunday, May 3, 2026.

If you plan to burn prior to the closure, you must have a valid permit, call before you burn at 541-475-1789, and follow all safety requirements.

Beginning Monday, May 4, 2026, summer burning restrictions will be in effect. Under these restrictions:

  • Burning is allowed in approved burn barrels with screens only, with a valid permit
  • Burning hours are sunrise to 10:00 a.m. daily
  • Fires must be attended at all times
  • Only approved materials may be burned
  • A pressurized water source (hose line) must be available
  • Fires must be fully extinguished by 10:00 a.m.

Backyard fires including warming fires, campfires, and cooking fires are generally allowed year-round within the Jefferson County Fire & EMS District and surrounding areas served by Central Oregon Fire Management Services.

All backyard fires must comply with local burning regulations. Additional restrictions may be implemented during periods of increased fire danger.
