This Just In: Idaho climber missing on Mt. Jefferson

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Jared John Empey, a 37-year-old climber from Kuna, Idaho, is missing after falling on Mount Jefferson last Friday. Recovery efforts are continuing today in Linn County.

Witnesses reported seeing Empey fall down the west side of the summit near the Red Saddle.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office received the initial report of a fallen climber on July 24, 2026, at 1135 hours. The search for Empey began that day after his backpack and other gear were located on the mountain. Based on witness observations, Sheriff Michelle Duncan indicates that Empey's fall was not survivable.

An Oregon Army National Guard helicopter launched a search of the area, locating what is believed to be the climber's backpack and other gear on the west side of the summit. However, the climber himself was not found. Ground search and rescue teams were deployed and began hiking into the base of Mount Jefferson, with plans to make the ascent at first light.

Investigators confirmed the recovered backpack and gear belonged to Empey, who was an experienced climber attempting to solo-summit the mountain.
