Oregon Senators Wyden, Merkley introduce bill to protect water amid worsening drought

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley have introduced legislation aimed at improving water access and infrastructure resilience for agricultural and urban communities across Oregon and the West. The proposed Western Water Reinvestment Act addresses water scarcity concerns brought on by persistent drought conditions across the region.

The legislative effort comes as many parts of Oregon remain under extreme drought. Most regions in the state currently have only one-third of their average annual snowpack following low winter snow accumulation.

The Western Water Reinvestment Act is designed to support projects that improve dam safety, build more resilient watersheds and secure water access for both agricultural producers and urban users. The legislation incorporates the Deschutes River Conservancy Reauthorization Act, a measure focused on water management and conservation.

Wyden stressed the need for federal intervention to safeguard agricultural resources against prolonged dry spells.

“Water scarcity in the West isn't a question of if, it's when,” Wyden said. “The federal government needs to get serious about protecting water resources before it's too late and my legislation will help Oregon's farmers and producers remain even more resilient against growing drought conditions.”

Additionally, Merkley emphasized that updated infrastructure is critical for long-term community stability across the state.

“As climate chaos fuels hotter and drier summers, we must ensure that we have reliable, resilient water infrastructure that every farmer, tribe and community in our state can count on,” Merkley said. “Passing this bill will provide more opportunities for crucial investments and innovative solutions to support communities facing persistent drought conditions.”
