Police shoot, kill man in Salem, Oregon

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say police fatally shot a 40-year-old man who fled a traffic stop in Salem, Oregon. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports Richard Meyers died in a confrontation involving Salem officers Chad Treichler, Griffin McDowell, Jonathan McNichols and David Baker. Police tried stopping his vehicle after 12:30 a.m. Monday, but say Meyers drove away. He traveled to Northgate Park and stopped in a field. Police said there was a confrontation between Meyers and officers and shots were fired by three of the officers. Meyers died at a hospital. The four officers are on paid leave while Oregon State Police investigate. Police didn’t say who fired weapons or what happened immediately before the shooting.
