Bend’s November warmer, drier than normal, NWS says

Despite that cold, snowy end to the month

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Despite a decidedly snowy and cold end to November in Bend, the month overall was actually warmer and drier than normal, according to statistics released Monday by the National Weather Service in Pendleton.

Here's the monthly climate summary for Bend (note: "normal" is a 30-year record, updated at the end of each decade, so these figures reflect the 1981-2010 time frame):

According to preliminary data received by NOAA's National Weather Service in Pendleton, temperatures at Bend averaged warmer than normal during the month of November.

 The average temperature was 39.8 degrees, which was 2.2 degrees above normal. High temperatures averaged 52.8 degrees, which was 5.5 degrees above normal. The highest was 72 degrees on the 5th. Low temperatures averaged 26.8 degrees, which was 1.1 degrees below normal. The lowest was 3 degrees, on the 29th.

There were 21 days with the low temperature below 32 degrees. There were three days when the high temperature stayed below 32 degrees.

Precipitation totaled 1.10 inches during November, which was 0.29 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation - at least .01 inch - was received on five days with the heaviest, 0.60 inches reported on the 27th.

 Precipitation this year has reached 13.27 inches, which is 4.11 inches above normal. Since October, the water year precipitation at Bend has been 1.56 inches, which is 0.43 inches below normal.

Snowfall totaled 10.2 inches, with at least 1 inch of snow reported on 2 days. The heaviest snowfall was 6.0 inches reported on the 27th.

 The outlook for December from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center calls for above-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation. Normal highs for Bend fall from 41.0 degrees at the start of December to 40.0 degrees at the end of December. Normal lows fall from 24.0 degrees to 23.0 degrees. The 30-year normal December precipitation is 2.20 inches.

 According to preliminary data received by NOAA's National Weather Service in Pendleton, temperatures at Prineville averaged slightly warmer than normal during the month of November.

 The average temperature was 40.4 degrees, which was 0.8 degrees above normal. High temperatures averaged 55.5 degrees, which was 5.7 degrees above normal. The highest was 72 degrees on the 9th. Low temperatures averaged 25.2 degrees, which was 4.2 degrees below normal. The lowest was 4 degrees, on the 30th.

  There were 25 days with the low temperature below 32 degrees. There were three days when the high temperature stayed below 32 degrees.

 Precipitation totaled 0.38 inches during November, which was 0.80 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation - at least .01 inch - was received on six days, with the heaviest, 0.17 inches reported on the 28th.

Precipitation this year has reached 13.50 inches, which is 4.26 inches above normal. Since October, the water year precipitation at Prineville has been 0.73 inches, which is 1.28 inches below normal.

Snowfall totaled 4.9 inches with at least 1 inch of snow reported on 2 days. The heaviest snowfall was 2.5 inches reported on the 28th. The greatest depth of snow on the ground was 4 inches on the 28th.

The outlook for December from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center calls for above-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation. Normal highs for Prineville fall from 44.0 degrees at the start of December to 40.0 degrees at the end of December. Normal lows fall from 26.0 degrees to 24.0 degrees. The 30 year normal precipitation is 1.44 inches.
