Bend WinterFest kicks off this weekend, with snowy weather adding both charm and challenges

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Amid decidedly wintry weather, a fun winter tradition - the Bend WinterFest - returns to the Old Mill District this weekend, starting on Friday. Last year, the three-day event attracted over 20,000 attendees.
Visit Bend says many WinterFest attendees travel from cities like Portland and Seattle, but the weather could complicate travel plans.
"We're a little bit concerned about the mountain conditions right now and folks' ability to get over here," said Nate Wyeth, Senior Vice President of Strategy at Visit Bend.
Wyeth says weather was a challenge during last year’s WinterFest, leading to numerous last-minute cancellations.
"The storms that happened over in the Valley sort of inhibited people's ability to get here," Wyeth said. "That led to a, kind of a bummer of a weekend for hotels and for the ability for the city to generate some travel income from our visitors."
Bend got some more snow Thursday night and Friday morning.
For some, that winter weather only enhances the festival experience.
"I think if anything, the weather will bring people out because it’s all centered around winter and winter weather," said Randy Vance, CEO of Boss Mortgage.
The festival also raises money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon, a 21 Cares for Kids partner. In 2024, it raised more than $12,000.
"This year, we're looking to eclipse that mark," Vance said.
