What to know about the wolf spotted in Central Oregon

CENTRAL OREGON (KTVZ) -- A young male gray wolf recently spotted in Central Oregon is healthy and mobile, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

According to Think Wild, ODFW said the collared wolf is engaging in natural dispersal behavior, traveling from its family group to seek new territory and potential mates.

Photos of the wolf circulated following sightings in the region, prompting questions from the public. ODFW clarified that seeing a wolf in a new area does not mean the animal is lost, sick or in need of help.

While some observers expressed concern that the wolf appeared thin, officials noted that wolves are naturally lean during the summer months. The agency confirmed the wolf's current body condition is not a cause for concern.

The wolf has been observed eating roadkill along the highway, putting the animal at risk of being struck by a vehicle. Think Wild advises drivers who see the wolf near a roadway to honk their horns and make noise from inside their vehicle. Officials said this gentle hazing encourages the wolf to move away from the road while reinforcing a natural fear of people and vehicles.

To protect both the wolf and the public, officials urge people never to feed the animal or leave food out. Feeding wildlife can lead to habituation, reduce their natural fear of humans and increase the likelihood of future conflicts. Spectators should not approach, follow or try to get closer for photos and pet owners should keep dogs and other animals at a safe distance.

Think Wild also recommended that people who spot roadkill or hit an animal safely remove it from the roadway using gloves or a shovel if it can be done safely. Maintaining a distance ensures wolves remain wary of humans, making them less likely to approach homes, roads, livestock, pets or populated areas.
