PRINEVILLE, Ore. (KTVZ) – A Prineville woman was arrested Sunday night on assault and other charges, accused of hitting her 90-year-old grandmother on the back of the head with a wine bottle during a family disagreement, Crook County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies, Prineville police and Crook County Fire & Rescue medics were dispatched around 8:30 p.m. Sunday to a reported assault that had just occurred at a home in the 800 block of Northwest Peppermint Lane, sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Durheim said.

Deputies contacted the alleged victim, a resident who was hiding in her bathroom, the sergeant said. She had a large cut on the back of her head and was taken to St. Charles Prineville for treatment.

Due to the nature of the call, the Central Oregon Major Incident Team was activated and search warrants obtained to search the alleged victim’s address and another Prineville home, Durheim said.

The investigation led to the arrest of Sara Smith, 40, who was booked into the county jail on charges of second-degree assault (domestic violence), fourth-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and interfering with making a police report.

Smith was arraigned on the initial charges Tuesday and a judge set bail at $100,000, pending her scheduled arraignment on an expected indictment next Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office also was assisted by the Crook County District Attorney’s Office and the Oregon State Police Crime Lab, Durheim said.
