Washington car-theft suspect steals kayak for downstream escape, but runs aground and is caught

CENTRALIA, Wash. (KTVZ) – The Washington State Patrol this week helped police in Centralia, Washington catch a car-theft suspect who stole a kayak and eventually ran aground and was captured.

The suspect fled on foot from a stolen car they were driving to the nearby river, troopers said in a Facebook post.

“The scallywag then stole a costly kayak from a nearby home and took to the high seas – or at least downstream – for an hour or so,” WSP said.

“Eventually, he ran aground and tried to escape on foot, but he was apprehended some distance later, as he couldn’t hidden from Smokey,” the agency said in its posting, which ended with a hashtag: “#YouCanPaddleButYouCan’tHide.”
