July 31 plea date set for Bend-area man accused of attempted murder, shooting Redmond-area man in the face
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A July 31 plea hearing was scheduled Monday for a 36-year-old Bend man indicted on attempted murder and other charges, accused of shooting a 56-year-old Redmond-area man in the face two weeks ago near a northeast Redmond intersection.
Darron Jay Reece was arraigned before Deschutes County Circuit Judge Beth Bagley after a grand jury indicted him last Thursday on four felony charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm and felon in possession of a firearm in the June 3 shooting of Lowell Edward Templeton.
The indictment said Templeton was shot with a .40-caliber handgun. Redmond Police said the victim was being treated for life-threatening injuries but is expected to survive.
Redmond Police arrested Reece three days after the shooting, which occurred the evening of Monday, June 3 near the intersection of NE Hemlock Avenue and 17th Street. Lt. Eric Beckwith said Reece went to the Prineville Police Department and turned himself in a day after being question regarding his involvement in the shooting.
District Attorney Steve Gunnels said Reece also turned in the handgun allegedly used in the crime. The DA said both men lived in RVs but their relationship was not clear. Last week in court, a prosecutor said Reece admitting to shooting Templeton.
Bagley kept Reece’s bail set at $500,000 under the conditions as outlined previously, if he were able to post 10 percent of that amount and be released. Reece has now appeared in court twice by video from the jail, after refusing to make his initial court appearance.
