They’re back: Redmond Police warn of imposter call scam; Deschutes County SO warns of ‘jury duty’ scam

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Redmond Police Department alerted the public on Tuesday about a familiar scam in which a person is representing themselves as a Redmond police officer.

The caller specifically claims to be Sergeant Gautney, and is contacting individuals regarding “an urgent legal matter,” Lieutenant Eric Beckwith said.

He said the contact has been in the form of voice messages and has been sent to multiple people in the Central Oregon area.

"Please do not call this phone number back," Beckwith said.

if you do receive one of these scam calls or messages, you're asked to please report it to RPD’s non-emergency dispatch number, 541-693-6911.

"RPD would like to remind our citizens to never provide sensitive information or send anyone money without verifying their identity and the purpose of the request," Beckwith said.

"RPD will never request you send money in any form to any employee.  RPD will not ask anyone to disclose personal identification information without first properly identifying ourselves, explaining the reason for the request and allowing anyone to verify our credentials."

Meanwhile, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office warned late last week about another familiar scam. The “jury duty” scam involves someone calling and claiming to be affiliated with DCSO.

“They will then claim that you have a bench warrant for failure to appear at jury duty and offer to resolve the warrant for payment,” the online posting stated. “Typically, they will request payment through an online money transfer, gift cards or Bitcoin.”

And much like Redmond PD said, as do other law enforcement agencies: “DCSO will NEVER request payment in lieu of a warrant service.”
