BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A tip from police in California and a surveillance operation by two SWAT teams on a private parcel along Highway 20 east of Bend led to the arrest of an assault suspect wanted on a nationwide felony warrant, authorities said Tuesday.
On Sunday, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office received information from the Redding, Calif., Police Department that a subject with a nationwide felony warrant was possibly in Deschutes County. The California charges were of assault with a deadly weapon and trespass.
Sheriff's detectives learned that Salvador Edward Juarez, 50, a Shasta County, Calif. resident, was on private property in the 26000 block of Highway 20 east of Bend, Sergeant Jason Wall said in a news release.
Sheriff's detectives applied for and were granted a search warrant for Juarez, as well as evidence of any crimes committed in Oregon and California.
The sheriff's office SWAT Team and the Central Oregon Emergency Response Team (CERT) initiated a surveillance operation and were able to locate Juarez at the above-listed address, Wall said.
Central Oregon Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a regional SWAT team consisting of members from several jurisdictions within the tri-county area.
On Sunday, after a lengthy ground and aerial surveillance operation, deputies received confirmation that Juarez was indeed present at the property, the SWAT and CERT teams established an operational plan to take him into custody, the sergeant said.
Within minutes of several armored rescue vehicles and SWAT and CERT personnel arriving on the scene, Juarez surrendered unclothed without incident and was taken into custody on the nationwide felony warrant.
A Deschutes County Jail spokeswoman told KTVZ Juarez had left the jail Tuesday for transport to California to face the charges.
"The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Central Oregon Emergency Team for partnering with us to bring about a swift and safe resolution to this incident," Wall said.
