Watch: Wanted Bend man arrested in stolen SUV after police spike strips end wild high-speed drive through town
(Update: Adding viewer video, suspect's name, formal charges, arraignment delayed)
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A Bend man wanted on a felony warrant stole an SUV whose owner left it warming up at the Riverhouse Lodge hotel, then took it on a wild drive through town, including a golf course. He was arrested after a spike strip flattened the tires and officers pinned in the vehicle on a cul-de-sac.
Officers responded shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday to the reported stolen vehicle at the Riverhouse Lodge on North U.S. Highway 97, Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said. The owner said he'd been warming up his gray Mazda CX5 when a man got into the car and drove away.
As officers were investigating, the SUV passed an officer southbound on SE Third Street, going about 90-100 mph, Miller said.
Several Bend Police officers, Deschutes County sheriff's deputies and Oregon State Police troopers responded to the call.
The suspect, later identified as Christopher Charles Edward Peterson, 26, drove the SUV southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 97, onto the Old Back Nine golf course and through the Caldera High School parking lot before classes began. Bend Police advised the school, which was briefly placed in "secure" status, meaning exterior doors were locked.
"Bend Police did not pursue the vehicle, instead setting up throughout the area to attempt a stop," the police spokeswoman said.
At the SE 15th Street and Reed Market Road roundabout, deputies successfully executed a spike strip, which flattened the vehicle’s tires. Peterson ultimately drove onto Ventura Place, a cul-de-sac, where officers pinned the SUV in place, Miller said
Peterson was taken into custody around 7:45 a.m. He had a felony warrant and was arrested and booked into the Deschutes County Jail on suspicion of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and third-degree theft. Jail records showed he was held without bail on a parole violation.
Peterson is set to be arraigned Friday afternoon, set over from Thursday, on two Class C felonies – unauthorized use of a vehicle and fleeing or attempting to elude police – and three misdemeanor counts: second-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and third-degree theft.
