GRESHAM, Ore. (KGW) -- A 13-year-old boy was killed by gunfire that penetrated a neighboring apartment where he was sleeping early Sunday morning, according to the Gresham Police Department.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting on Southwest 11th Street near Highland Drive shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, police said. Upon arrival, they determined a shooting had occurred inside an apartment with multiple rounds penetrating through walls into an adjacent unit.

A teenager sleeping in the neighboring apartment was struck by gunfire. Officers rendered immediate aid before medical responders transported the 13-year-old victim to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, authorities reported.

The name of the victim is not being released at the request of the family, according to police.

Officers also located another shooting victim a short distance from the scene. That person was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the department said.

The East County Major Crimes Team is investigating the shooting.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Lindsay Friderich at Lindsay.Friderich@GreshamOregon.gov or Detective Martin Daly at Martin.Daly@GreshamOregon.gov.
