Meta cutting 66 jobs in Prineville as contract ends, says most workers may be rehired

PRINEVILLE, Ore. (KTVZ) — A contractor working with Meta will lay off at least 66 employees at its Prineville data center next month. The company tells KTVZ News the cuts come as it ends its contract with Milestone Technologies Inc., but says most workers could be rehired through a different firm.
KTVZ News has asked Meta why it ended its vendor contract, who will replace Milestone Technologies Inc., and when affected workers could be rehired. Milestone has provided staffing, IT services, and support at Meta’s data centers.
The Prineville layoffs are part of a larger picture of workforce reductions and strategic investments by Meta. The tech giant is eliminating 8,000 jobs globally and will not fill 6,000 open roles.
Milestone Technologies, Inc., based in Fremont, Calif., informed the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) of the impending layoffs via a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice.
None of the affected employees at the Prineville facility is represented by a union.

Janelle Gale stated in the internal memo that these actions are part of the company's efforts to operate more efficiently and to offset other significant investments. "We're doing this as part of our continued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we're making," Gale wrote. "This is not an easy tradeoff, and it will mean letting go of people who have made meaningful contributions to Meta during their time here."
A spokesperson for Meta told KTVZ News that they continue to make substantial investments in data centers across its entire portfolio, including its campus in Prineville. The company is aggressively expanding its own data center footprint and securing necessary components through supply chain deals for future capacity.
Meta is also signing multi-year cloud deals that are expected to come online throughout 2026 and 2027, enabling the company to scale more quickly. These cloud deals and infrastructure purchase agreements led to a $107 billion increase in Meta's contractual commitments this quarter.
The company's investments are designed to support training needs for future AI models and to provide the inference capacity required to deliver personal and business agents to billions of people worldwide, in addition to several other AI product experiences under development. According to Data Center Mapper, the address listed on the HECC emails for the affected Milestone facility is part of Meta's Prineville campus.
The first group of separations for Milestone Technologies, Inc. employees in Prineville is scheduled to occur on June 28, 2026.
