Redmond Police plan one-day ‘focused patrol’ crackdown on off-leash dogs on Dry Canyon Trail
REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) - On Thursday, August 8, the Redmond Police Department said it plans to conduct a "focus patrol" effort on off-leash dogs along the Dry Canyon Trail, "to support users abiding by the rules, and to have contact with those who are not."
The department said in a Saturday Facebook post it "has recently received reports of dogs off-leash in the Dry Canyon Trail and would like to remind everyone to utilize the Weigand Family Dog Park, which offers both a large- and small-dog area!"
The Weigand Family Dog Park is located at 1429 W. Antler Avenue. Follow this link for dog park rules (https://www.redmondoregon.gov/.../parks.../dog-park-rules), which include, "Always keep your dog on a leash outside of the designated off-leash area [City Code 5.265]."
Redmond Police said it "conducts regular patrols in the Dry Canyon Trail, but will increase staffing and compliance efforts on August 8."
Commenters on the post posted about their own problematic encounters, or frustration with dog owners not watching and/or not cleaning up after them: "Why even have a dog if you can't be responsible for them?
There also was a call for having a northern section of the Dry Canyon "be a leash-optional section" by someone who added, "Fenced off-leash parks are not safe, ask any trainer."
The woman said a site such as Bend's Good Dog! Park as "a great example of a recreational trail system where people can enjoy exercising while their dog runs free. Such a better experience than fenced parks."
But as for the northern Dry Canyon idea, someone questioned whether most users would want such a change: "That's a lot of the park and the most natural area."
