Beyond the Score, Ep. 60: Summit girls soccer starts the season with a statement win
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ)--The Summit Storm girls soccer team is off to a strong start, and senior Nina Taft is already making her mark.
On Tuesday, Taft delivered the game-winning goal against 6A Lake Oswego, giving Summit its first win of the season. It was a memorable moment for Taft, who is playing varsity soccer for the first time as a senior.
“I mean, I'm a senior, and this is my first year on varsity,” Taft said. “I still feel the adrenaline. I could literally cry. It's just such a great feeling. It's awesome.”
Taft's goal was also her first at the varsity level, but she said the win was a team effort.
“I already love this team. I know these girls so well, and I think we're already building such great chemistry,” Taft said.
While Taft is making an impact on the offensive side, Ruth Gobershock is helping lead a Summit defense that has some new faces this season.
The Storm lost several key defenders to graduation, but Gobershock and the rest of the back line are embracing the opportunity to step up.
“It feels so good,” Gobershock said of the team's start. “We went into it confident. Of course, there were some first-game nerves, but we knew we had each other. We were going to put in the work for each other, put in the work for ourselves, and just come away with the win.”
Summit showed its resilience against Lake Oswego after conceding an early goal.
“We conceded really early, and I think that kind of put things into perspective,” Gobershock said. “We needed to lock it down. Being able to come back from that shows our resilience as a team and shows how strong we are.”
The Storm continued their strong start Thursday, shutting out Wilsonville 5-0.
Summit is now off to a perfect start and looking to build chemistry and confidence before the heart of the season arrives.
“We're really just going to continue doing what we're doing,” Taft said. “We're going to show up for each other, put in the work at practice, and give it our all.”
With a pair of wins already under their belt, the Storm are hoping their early success carries into the rest of the season — including matchups against conference rivals such as Bend High.
