Snow continues tonight, ending Wednesday, returning Thursday

The first in a series of wintry storms is crossing the region today and will impact the area with snow and blowing snow. The snow will be in the 3 – 6” range with travel being impacted.  The bulk of the heavier snow is on the Cascades, as expected, and the resorts are getting a good dose of snow. The other aspect of the storm is the wind, which has not materialized as widespread as anticipated, but still in the forecast. South of Bend in La Pine, Sunriver and Lava Butte the snow and wind will be more intense in those areas.  Sisters is expected to see more snow as well and are included in the Blizzard Warning.

The Blizzard Warning is still in place for the southern and western sections of Deschutes County along with the western section of Jefferson County as well as the length of the Oregon and Washington Cascades. Travel through the passes is difficult and dangerous, so please exercise caution when driving today, tonight, and early tomorrow.

The snow will taper off Wednesday morning and we will have a brief break before more snow arrives. The next wave of snow showers will be Thursday, but this round will be more showery than today. The totals may be in the 1 – 2” range.

Friday looks to be more of a troubling forecast as there will be a strong front passing through. This will provide more snow late Friday through Saturday that may accumulate several inches once again.

Winds will be more intense Saturday as well so travel will be impacted greatly.

Following the snow, which is expect to taper off late Saturday, we will have to contend with bitter cold temperatures and dangerously cold wind chill values. Temperatures will dip to the single digits in rural areas and with the wind we will feel like sub-zero conditions.
