Chilly nights and mild afternoons will define the rest of the week

The area is saying good-by to the several days of cool conditions and the chance for snow.  Although we did pop above normal last weekend, the past week or so has been on the chilly side.  This is all going to change as we move toward the weekend. Expect dry conditions for several days and above normal temperature readings beginning Friday and lingering into next week.

High pressure will overtake the region and that usually means clear skies.  The clear conditions will allow the sun to warm the region during the day, but also allow us to cool quickly overnight.  The warm up will take a couple of days, but by the time we hit the weekend, we should be into the low 60s until the middle of next week.

The sun heats the ground and the ground heats the air (conduction) and that is one of the ways our air temperatures are impacted. Once the sun sets, the heat radiates away into the sky.  If we have a decent amount of cloud cover the heat gets trapped under the clouds (like a blanket keeps you warm in bed).  If there is no cloud cover, then no blanket, and we cool quickly.  This is what I expect for the next several days.  Mild days and chilly nights.

Winds will not be much of an issue, other than near the Cascades, so that too will allow the air to cool much quicker as well. Friction from the molecules as they blow around is another way to keep the heat in at night.

Bottom line, the area will be chilly at night and mild in the afternoons through the weekend and into early next week.

Also, remember that the air may be mild but the waterways are still very cold. Watch yourself near creeks and lakes this time of year.
