Stormy pattern today means some fire danger
Storms began late last night and continued overnight into this morning. These storms brought a few more showers than some of our other more recent storms, which is good news for firefighting efforts. The other side of the coin is that because we’ve been so hot and dry this summer, and we’re in the height of fire season, lightning is incredibly dangerous since it could easily ignite dry surface fuels. It’s not exactly “enough” rain to balance fire danger, but it is better.
Today, storms will continue through the day, popping up here and there. By evening time tonight, they will have moved northeast into the Blue Mountains. Tomorrow, we will have a break in the stormy weather while another low pressure over the Pacific gears up to make its way over us by Saturday, which will bring another wave of storms and showers.
Air quality will improve due to the lower temperatures and higher relative humidity over the next few days, helping to suppress some of the surrounding fires.
Temperatures today will drop a decent amount below normal, in the mid 70s. We’ll be in the upper 70s and low 80s for the next week. Lows in the 40s and 50s tonight.
Remember to stay safe. If you hear thunder roar, go indoors. The worst place to be during a thunderstorm is in an open field, by water, or under a tall tree.
Have a great Thursday.
