Abnormally hot conditions and air quality issues into the weekend

The air quality in Central Oregon is dangerously poor as the smoke from from the Rail Ridge Megafire and Wiley Flat fires grow.  The Rail Ridge fire is now over 100k acres, classifying it as a mega-fire. The Wiley Flat fire is burning hot and throwing off a lot of smoke. That, coupled with the heat, is making for unhealthy conditions for several communities.

The heat is an issue as we head into the weekend as well. The temperatures in early September are supposed to hover around the upper 70 in our region, this week we have seen several 90° days. There is a Heat Advisory in place until Saturday evening in Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook Counties as temps hit the middle and upper 90s. Please limit your outdoor activities this weekend due to the heat and the poor air quality.

There is little relief in sight as we push forward into the weekend as the ridge of high pressure responsible for the heat will linger.  The smoke is getting trapped under the sinking air of the high so there will be little relief in sight from the smoke either.

In addition to the heat and the smoke, there may be a few isolated dry thunderstorms in Central Oregon.  The heat is creating some lifting air opening the door for some storms.  The chance is very low, but not zero so we need to be alert for more lightning generated wildfires as the storms develop.

Next week looks to be much cooler as the ridge breaks down and some spotty showers arrive. Look for highs in the 80s early in the week and the low to middle 70s by mid-week. The best chance for some scattered showers is on Wednesday.
