Yard maintenance can start accidental fires

Bend, Ore. (KTVZ) — Bend Fire and Rescue is sending out a reminder and a warning. When it gets this hot and this dry, mowing and lawn care can start fires.

Central Oregon has already had several scares with fires close to towns, many were caused by humans. Earlier this month, a fire in Madras was sparked by a lawn mower.

For this reason, Bent Fire urges you to be cautious when working on your property. Right now might seem like a good time to do some trimming to make defensible space, it could also start a fire.

Deputy Fire Marshal, Dan Derlacki pinpointed how it can happen: “Lawnmowers, chainsaws and sometimes a weed eaters, anytime metal contacts rock, they have a chance for a spark. Whether it's a piece of metal coming off or the rock going out."

This time of year, the fire deparment wants people to think twice. "Be extremely cautious. Mowing your green grass, you're not going to have that problem," said Derlacki. "But if you're out mowing the backside of the property or out into the weeds, you need to have some water out there. And if it's really dry, don't mow. ”

If you have any confusion about local fire rules, contact your local agnecy.

Restrictions can vary greatly from place ot place.
