Local Alert Day: Storms develop this afternoon, brief rounds of heavy rain

(KTVZ, Bend Ore.)  A Local Alert Day has been issued for today as showers and storms are expected to develop in the afternoon.  These storms will have the potential to generate gusty winds, frequent lightning, and brief heavy downpours.

An area of low pressure has moved close to the coast and will be the main feature providing the rainy weather. The showers will be widespread this afternoon and into the evening. As was the case over the past few days, the showers will be accompanied by lightning.

The region has seen several new fire starts over the weekend and although we had a decent amount of rain, the fires are still active and any lightning today away from the main core of the storms, in other words dry lightning, may start new ones.

The rainy pattern is likely to continue into at least Wednesday as the low responsible for the wet weather is slow to move away.  Good opportunity to add to the declining reservoirs this week and to soak the soils.  Some pockets of brief heavy rain will be present, not too beneficial, but still adding to the lakes and reservoirs.

Tuesday will see high temperatures in the low 70s and upper 60s due to the cloud cover and rain.  The normal highs for this time of year are in the upper 70s. The rain will be likely once again as the persistent pattern of precipitation lingers.

Wednesday will be another day of rainy and isolated stormy conditions. The highs will once again be in the low 70s with mostly cloudy skies.  Winds near the storms will be gusty, not great news for the firefighting efforts.

Thursday will see a decline in the coverage of the rain, in other words, spotty and scattered showers. Still cooler than normal and still a chance for some isolated lightning strikes.

Friday will be partly to mostly cloudy with a stray shower.  Highs drift back to the middle 70s with some sunshine. Saturday looks dry but Sunday may see another round of rainy conditions.

Please, Stay safe.
