Off and on rain New Year’s Day, possible freezing rain

Happy first day of 2026!

We’re starting the new year with wet weather across the region as rain moved in early this morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory went into effect at 2am due to the potential for freezing rain. That happens when rain freezes on contact, creating a thin glaze of ice on roads, bridges, and sidewalks. Travel could be slippery in spots this morning, so use caution if you’re heading out.

This advisory is set to expire this afternoon as conditions are expected to transition mainly to rain.

For the rest of New Year’s Day, expect cloudy skies with periods of light rain. Mountain snow is also a possibility, but I wouldn’t expect much.

Afternoon highs will reach the upper 30s to mid 40s today.

The Air Stagnation Advisory is set to expire at noon. While air quality impacts are possible early today, the rain and increased winds should help improve conditions.

Looking ahead, tomorrow will be partly cloudy with mild temperatures. Highs reach the low 50s on Friday. A few light showers are possible Friday and Saturday, but any rain should be brief and minimal.

We’re looking at on and off rain and snow chances into next week. Nothing major right now, but we’ll keep an eye on it.
