Private patrol officer helps rescue sleeping woman from Bend apartment fire

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A private patrol officer helped evacuate residents and rescue a woman from a smoke-filled northwest Bend apartment early Sunday morning, according to an incident report submitted to KTVZ News by Patrol Services Inc.

The report says a Patrol Services officer heard a smoke alarm while patrolling Awbrey Pines Apartments, located at 2500 NW Regency Street, shortly before 1:40 a.m. The officer determined the alarm was coming from Building B after a downstairs resident reported smelling smoke.

After receiving no response at the door of an upstairs apartment, the patrol officer saw smoke coming from a window and called 911. At the dispatcher’s direction, the officer pulled the building’s fire alarm, knocked on surrounding doors to evacuate residents, and retrieved an on-site fire extinguisher.

Two Bend police officers arrived around 2:00a.m., according to the report. One officer, identified in the report as Zareh Ananian, forced open the apartment door and entered with the patrol officer.

The two searched the smoke-filled apartment and found a woman asleep in a bedroom while wearing headphones, the report says. They woke her and guided her outside. She reportedly told them no one else was inside.

Firefighters arrived as the woman was being evacuated and began clearing smoke from the apartment, according to the patrol company.

The report does not state what caused the smoke, whether there was significant fire damage, or whether anyone required medical treatment.
