Central Oregon Strong: Tribute to Rhoam Summer by Hearts Unknown Education

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Artists and local youth have come together to create a very special tribute to Rhoam Summer.

Rhoam, who was one of the children lost in Silverrail, loved dinosaurs and sharks. And so, the kids at Hearts Unknown Education gathered to create shark- and dinosaur-themed artwork as a tribute to 5-year-old Rhoam Summer. At a gathering, the made painting and scupltures which will be delivered to the family. The creative project gave local youth an opportunity to make art and explore their own feelings during this time while creating a gift for his family.

Nico Carpinelli is the one of the founders of Hearts Unknown Education Carpinelli reflected on how the project served two purposes.

“For these kids it's super cathartic to just get out their feelings,” Carpinelli said. “But also you get that gift of giving, which is everything.”

The centerpiece of the effort was a large portrait of Rhoam created by local artist Shawna June. June focused the piece on recreating one of the best photos of Rhoam to capture his spirit. After the portrait was completed, kids at Hearts Unknown added their own touches by surrounding the painting with additional drawings of dinosaurs and sharks.

This is part of a larger online effort being organized by the Summer family.
