Redmond Woman Killed In Hwy. 22 Head-On Collision

A Redmond woman was killed and a Bend couple injured Wednesday afternoon in a head-on crash on state Highway 22E about six miles east of Detroit, Oregon State Police said.

Cynthia Lee White, 42,driving of a 1988 Ford Mustang, was wearing a seat belt but was pronounced dead at the scene, OSP troopers said.

The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. when White’s car, eastbound on the highway, lost control on a right-hand curve and crossed the center line, crashing head-on into a westbound 1998 Toyota Avalon on the westbound shoulder, said OSP Sgt. Michael Stupfel.

The Toyota’s driver, Rober McJunkin, 62, and passenger Sandra McJunkin, 61, both of Bend, also were wearing seat belts and were taken to Santiam Hospital in Stayton with non-life threatening injuries, Stupfel said.

The highway was well-sanded at the time of the collision, the sergeant said in a news release, adding that “excessive speed is a possible factor.”

White was driving with a suspended license, troopers said.

It took until about 3:45 p.m. to reopen one lane of traffic and the highway was completely cleared about 5 p.m., Stupfel said.
